We want to warn you about a way scammers are scheming to get your money. It’s happening at hotels in Colorado Springs.

11 News talked to a hotel guest, who didn’t want to give her name, but tells us she woke up to a strange phone call around 6 Friday morning in her room at the Mining Exchange Hotel.

The caller said he was with the hotel.

“My name is James, from the front desk."

The caller said her credit card charge to pay for her room didn’t go through.

“I need you to read me your card and I said, ‘Wait a minute, why do you need it now?’"

She knew something was not right.

"He never addressed me by name; his demeanor did not seem as professional as I would expect it to be. He needed the credit card read to him immediately. Then he started getting a little testy with me.”

The call was a scam, but she didn’t fall for it. Instead, she checked with the front desk at the hotel, and they said they didn’t have anyone who worked there by that name.

"By the time I would have gotten down to the desk, a half hour later, who knows how many charges they would've put on my credit card.”

Now she wants to warn other guests about the scam, and thank the hotel for their quick actions to stop it.

“I wanted to commend them for warning other hotels in the area. I wanted to commend them for getting the policy in place so quickly, and for being overly responsible and as concerned as I was.”

We’re told both the Mining Exchange and Antler’s Hilton were targeted between Thursday night and Friday morning, but no guests fell for the scam.

Both tell us they are now new procedures in place so this won’t happen again.

And they remind guests they’ll never ask for credit card information over the phone.

The best advice to protect yourself if you get a call like this is to hang up and call the front desk clerk yourself, and never give out your personal information over the phone.
