A fire ripped through a home in Security-Widefield early Thursday morning, destroying the structure and killing one person.
The victim has been identified as a 64-year-old woman. No further details have been released.
The fire began just after 1 a.m. at a home on the 400 block of Cielo Vista Street and quickly engulfed the home. Five of the six occupants managed to escape, though three, including a 6-year-old boy, were injured.
Firefighters were able to get the smoke and flames under control within in an hour, but the heat remained so intense and the structure so unstable that crews were unable to go inside for several hours, either to search for the victim or to begin an investigation into the fire's cause. The house is a total loss.
The 6-year-old suffered from smoke inhalation, while a woman and a 15-year-old girl both sustained burn wounds to their arms and feet. All are expected to recover.
Two dogs that went missing during the fire were located and unharmed.
Firefighters from Security-Widefield and Fort Carson responded. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office told 11 News they are impressed with the firefighters' work, as with so many trees in the area and homes so close together, the fire could have easily spread.
The Pikes Peak Red Cross is assisting the family. Anyone who wishes to offer further help to the family can contact PPRC at 632-3563.
