Record Turnout for Manitou Springs Coffin Races

An annual autumn event drew a record number of people to Manitou Springs on Saturday.

The 19th Annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races kicked off around noon.

Over 8,000 people packed along Manitou Avenue to cheer on their favorite teams in the coffin races.

54 race teams competed on Saturday with very unique and creative coffins and costumes. Event coordinators thanked the local fire and police departments for their help during the flash flooding in Manitou Springs.

11 News caught up with the winning team, "Ghouls Gulch."

“It feels awesome. We won last year so we came into this wanting to defend our title from last year,” explained Aaron Butcher.

"We are different than any other community in the country. We are the only ones who can run coffins down the street. We really believe in supporting our historic preservation. And supporting the local mom and pop shops and not the big box stores,” said event emcee, Erick Wright.

Each team was required to have an "Emma" riding inside the coffin.

Overall Race Results:

1st Place – Ghouls Gulch 22.66
2nd Place – Thriller 23.43
3rd Place – Catamount Wildland Fire Team 23.68
4th Place – Medically Enhanced Rocky Mountain Oysters 25.47
