A mother recognized her daughter in surveillance video aired Saturday night--and sprung to action.
Her daughter and an accomplice allegedly posed as volunteers at Denver animal shelter MaxFund, and stole a shar-pei puppy named Nick.
MaxFund says this is the first time someone has ever stolen a dog from their shelter.
Employees took their word for it when a man and woman came in Wednesday afternoon, claiming to be volunteers who had forgotten their badges. All volunteers have a badge with their picture right on the front.
Surveillance video shows the couple was given two spare badges at the front desk. Bypassing the rest of the protocols, they headed for the small dog room and made a bee-line for Nick's cage.
They grabbed a leash and took the dog out for a walk, nothing out of the ordinary--until they didn't come back.
After seeing the news story, the female suspect's mother returned Nick to the shelter. CBS affiliate KCNC says her daughter has since run away.
The shelter has several safeguards in place to prevent incidents like this from occurring: visitors are buzzed in so they can sign in, volunteers have to check in, and all have to leave their IDs and car keys with the front desk before checking out a dog for a walk. The pair pretending to be volunteers bypassed all those steps.
