Progress Made In Manitou Flood Recovery

City leaders are encouraged by what they're seeing in Manitou less than a month from the last major flooding event. Work crews are meeting many priorities, a long list of which was presented to Mayor Marc Snyder and City Council Tuesday night.

Public Works Director Bruno Pothier reported many of more than 30 major road repairs are already finished.

Currently the firm Wright Water Engineers is evaluating Manitou Springs to come up with longer term fixes to other important drainage and flood mitigation projects. In the meantime, the streets of Manitou are populated with visitors, which business owners like. Workers who spoke with 11 News Tuesday are happy that the efforts are helping bring customers through their doors.

"They're always very positive about encouraging Manitou and how they love it and how many times they've come back,” said Diane Nelson, who works at Manitou Outpost and Gallery. “They are really appreciative that we're open."

Administrators reported Tuesday Manitou is expecting about $2.3 million in federal, state, county and other funding to cover rebuilding and repair costs. Currently, the projected leftover costs to the city are right around $375,000, a figure that Finance Director Rebecca Davis said could still be reduced if outside dollars keep coming to the city.

Leaders will likely have to dip into the city of Manitou’s general fund reserves of almost $500,000 to cover the rest of the tab.
