COLORADO SPRINGS - Co. A man barricaded in his home for hours is now in custody.

The Colorado Springs Police Department says the standoff started as a welfare check after neighbors reported hearing shots fired from a home on Camfield Circle. They initially believed it was a possible suicide.

Police arrived on scene at the house in northeast Colorado Springs around 11 a.m. Thursday. They were unable to make contact with the man inside.

At first, police reported the incident was not a standoff but that changed once they obtained a search warrant and learned the man was alive and not allowing them to enter. El Paso County's SWAT team was called in to assist. Neighbors were asked to leave their homes.

At 3:30 p.m., negotiators were able to speak with the man. He emerged from the home safely and without incident.

The man is in custody but that does not mean he's been arrested or charged with anything. Police say that information will be decided later.
