Police Search For Suspect Who Shot And Killed Dog

Occupants in a vehicle opened fire on a man and two teens, killing a dog caught in the barrage of bullets.

One of the victims reported being followed by a white sedan as he walked his two dogs towards a playground where his cousins and a couple of friends were hanging out.

The sedan reportedly followed the 24-year-old man around the corner and up the street before someone inside started shooting. 11 News talked to that man, he asked us not to use his name.

"When I heard the first gunshot I tried diving towards the kids and I threw them on the ground, tell them to get down then I yelled at them, told them to run home."

Bullets hit a nearby townhome, a vehicle and struck one of the pit bulls, killing it. The dog’s owner says his dog Lakota was just 1-year-old. Police say at least five shots were fired.

"I was crying, screaming for help because that’s my baby you know."

None of the people involved were injured.

It's unknown if the dog was hit accidentally, or if it was targeted by the shooter.

"That is a threat and sort of shooting indiscriminately towards people not caring if they hit someone is a problem and somebody we'd like to find," CSPD Sergeant Walsh said.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday on the 800 block of Yuma Street in Colorado Springs. The suspect vehicle is described as a white 2000 or 2001 Mitsubishi Galant with "heavily" tinted windows. Police say the tinted windows prevented the victims from seeing who was inside the sedan.

If you have any information about this crime, call police at 444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.
