The Pueblo police officer who was shot in the early hours of New Year's Day, as well as the officer who shot the suspect, have been identified.

Ed Slattery, who has been with the Police Department for just over a year, was shot in the shoulder during a police chase early Tuesday morning. The Police Department said in a statement Friday that he is recovering slowly but is expected to eventually expected to return to work.

Prior to joining the police force in Pueblo, Slattery was an 11-year veteran of the Canon City Police Department.

Detective James Olonia, an 11-year veteran of the Pueblo Police Department, has been identified as the one who shot and killed the suspect.

Earlier in the week, police released the names of the suspects involved. They are 32-year-old Christopher Tavares, 22-year-old Marquis Robinson and 21-year-old Kenneth Hastings; both are from Colorado Springs.

The three men were all in a car that officers tried to pull over early New Year's Day, after hearing gun shots near 11th and Greenwood, in Pueblo.

The car took off and, after a brief chase, crashed into a light pole in the 800 block of Craig Street.

Marquis, the driver of the car, along with the other two men, ran from the crash.

That's when police say Tavares shot Slattery as he pulled up to the scene. Slattery then returned fire.

Hastings and Robinson were caught a short time later, in the area.
Police say Tavares made it to Highway 50 and Elizabeth Street on foot. That’s where Olonia shot and killed him when he wouldn't obey the detective's orders.

Robinson was charged with Eluding, Resisting Arrest and Driving Under Restraint, then booked into county jail. Hasting was interviewed and released. The investigation is ongoing.

Olonia is on routine administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
