An arrest has been made in a shooting that left a pregnant woman dead and a newborn baby in critical condition.

Police have identified the suspect in Monday's shooting as Andre Jones, 32, of Fountain. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

The victim has been identified as Lakeisha Jones, also 32, of Colorado Springs. Pregnant at the time of the shooting, her baby survived; doctors were able to successfully deliver the infant, who is now in critical condition.

The incident happened at the Summit Apartments, a complex located near Highway 115 and Lake on the southwest side of town.

11 News talked to one man who lives in the same building and was shocked to hear about what happened.

"You always hate to hear somebody got shot, even worse a pregnant woman," Kurt Dunaway said.

He said he would have never expected something like this to happen where he lives.

"(The shooting is) just not something we expect here; it's been a nice, quiet neighborhood," Dunaway said.

The incident was first reported as a medical call, so Springs firefighters were first to arrive on scene, just before 9:30 a.m. But when they found the woman, they realized she had been shot.

The victim was still in her apartment when emergency crews reached her. She was quickly pulled out of the building by a paramedic, who was concerned that the shooter might still be inside.

"The firefighter-paramedic, believing the woman was in danger, heroically dragged her to a safe location while performing life-saving measures," the Colorado Springs Police Department said in a statement.

Police and SWAT swarmed the complex, searching for the suspect. An emergency notification went to people living at or near the Summit Apartments.

When officers first arrived, they were unable to locate the victim's children. The children were eventually located, unharmed, and taken to a safe place.

Law enforcement evacuated one building while they searched for the shooter. Residents living in the building were evacuated during the search and most of the day.

Nearby Harrison High School and Fox Meadow Middle School, as well as the District 2 administration building, were put on "lock out" status for much of the day. D-2 said it was a precautionary measure due to the schools' proximity to the apartment complex.

This is the 23rd homicide in Colorado Springs.
