A pilot is in serious condition after her plane crashed into a ravine in Castle Rock Monday night.

The pilot was reportedly able to climb out of the ravine herself, and was alert when rescuers reached her. She was the only person on board the single-engine plane. The pilot was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

A witness spotted the plane in the ravine, still mostly intact, and called for help.

"I just happened to shine my flashlight down in the gully and saw the plane," the witness told 11 News.

According to authorities, the plane went down around 7 p.m. near I-25, hitting power lines as it crashed and briefly knocking out power. The plane missed the nearest home by just 100 feet.

The plane was on a flight path to Centennial Airport, on the south end of the Denver metro area, when it went down.

The Castle Rock Fire Department currently believes fog played at least a partial role in the crash. Authorities will be continuing the investigation Tuesday morning.
