Operation Christmas Child Collection Begins

Organizers for a worldwide Christmas charity say they want to collect 27,800 shoe boxes filled with things like toys, school supplies and hygiene items from people in southern Colorado.

Operation Christmas Child started its national collection week Monday.

The gift-filled shoe boxes are sent to children in need around the world.

The main drop off location in Colorado Springs is located at the Vista Grande Baptist Church on 5680 Stetson Hill Blvd. Drop-off hours are:

Mon - Fri 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sat 10 a.m. -1 p.m.
Sun 1 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Additional drop-off locations can be found on the Samaritan's Purse website.

The organization says it hopes to collect 9.8 million shoe boxes in 2013.
