Today a man is behind bars in California - accused of killing his girlfriend in Colorado.
His name is William Donnel III and he's accused of shooting and killing his 29 year-old girlfriend, Tara Martinez, back in February. The couple lived in Olney Springs- that's about 40 miles east of Pueblo.
Deputies with the Crowley County Sheriff's Office were called to a trailer in the 200 block of Schuyler Avenue just after 2 a.m. on February 19 after family members found Martinez. She had been shot.
CBI agents and sheriff’s deputies followed-up on numerous leads in the months following the death of Martinez. Donnell was caught last week while trying to re-enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California from Tijuana, Mexico. Authorities notified Colorado media about his arrest earlier today.
Donnell was found at the re-entry point in possession of marijuana. He originally lied to police about his identity which was revealed later after authorities finger-printed him.
Donnell will be extradited to Colorado where he will face first degree murder charges.
