More Changes Announced For D-60 Realignment Plan

The Pueblo City Schools Board of Education voted in a special session to close one of their elementary schools a year sooner. The closure comes as part of the district-wide middle school realignment plan.

Spann Elementary will now close by June 30 of this year instead of June 30, 2013.

Here is what district officials said about the closure in a press release:

On Jan. 12 the Board took action to close Spann Elementary by June 30 of 2013, depending upon the continuation of funding from the Tiered Intervention Grant (TIG) or federal turnaround grant the district was awarded for Spann. Given that the Board took action which would have ultimately closed Spann by June 30, 2013, the Colorado Department of Education has withdrawn funding for Spann for the next school year (2012-13). The Board today, in order to more effectively uses resources and in anticipation of additional budget cuts for next year, voted to close Spann Elementary School by June 30, 2012.

Assignment of Spann students to neighboring schools for the 2012-13 school year will soon be provided to Spann parents.

The board also revisited the Middle School Realignment plan originally presented in late November. The Board hear from district middle school staff and proposed the following changes in order to improve student achievement, offer additional choices for students, and make more effective use of resources:

Pitts – visual and performing arts and Advanced Placement (AP) focus

Roncalli – traditional middle school structure with a technology emphasis

Heaton – traditional middle school structure with focus on Academics, Arts and Athletics

Risley – will become part of an education design on the east side that will offer a pre-k – 12 International Baccalaureate (IB) focus.

(On Jan. 12 the Board voted to incorporate Somerlid Elementary into the Freed Middle School building next year and then create a pre-k – 8 school at Freed beginning fall 2013.)
