A man accused of abusing a 9-month-old under his care was sentenced to 26 years in prison Friday.

Travis Wallis was convicted for child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

According to court documents obtained by 11 News in August 2012, a neighbor called deputies to report that a baby was bruised and barely breathing. He told police that Wallis, 19 at the time, told him not to call authorities so they wouldn’t see bruises on the victim.

Investigators say at first Wallis denied knowing how the infant got hurt. Later he reportedly admitted that a few days earlier he was babysitting a number of kids.

Court documents go on to say that Wallis told investigators he became frustrated with the baby boy that he is reportedly a caretaker of, and admitted to throwing him on the couch. He says the baby hit his head on a piece of plywood that was exposed between two cushions.

According to court documents, Wallis said the child’s body hit hard enough that it bounced up.

He says he checked the baby’s head but found nothing wrong. Then the child got a fever and a cough for a few days and had trouble breathing.

Deputies say the incident happened in February of 2012 in Colorado Springs.

Wallis also reportedly admitted to hitting the other two kids who were three and four years old with a studded belt.
