A badly beaten man was found by a couple of hikers and their dogs near a campground Sunday morning, leading authorities to believe that he may have been victim of an assault.

Deputies were called to the Springdale Campground outside Woodland Park shortly before 11 a.m. on a medical call, where they located the man and transported him to a Colorado Springs hospital.

Lt. Jeff Kramer with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office told 11 News Monday that investigators now believe the man was trying to take his own life.

According to Kramer, though there are still a few other things investigators are looking at, based on the interview with the man and evidence collected, they are strongly leaning towards the wounds being self-inflicted.
