A man is in the hospital, listed in serious condition, after police say he led them on a high-speed chase that ended with the man crashing into an area library.
According to reports from the Pueblo Police Department, during the midnight hour on Friday an officer saw a 2010 Audi traveling south on Union, speeding at almost 70 mph. Once police turned on their lights and went after the driver, the Audi sped up and police gave chase.
At the bottom of Union Avenue, the officer saw the driver had taken out a light pole and crashed into the Rawlings Library. The driver, Kellen Trujillo, 28, was trapped in the car, and had to extricated with the Jaws of Life. He was transported to Parkview Medical Center in serious condition.
The Pueblo Regional Building Department was called to the library and determined that the building had not sustained any structural damage. The car's engine block and transmission were thrown 10 feet away from the car during the crash.
Police say both alcohol and speed were both factors in the accident. The driver consented to chemical testing. Because of his injuries, police say the charges will be referred to the DA's office.
