Colorado Springs police say a man who barricaded himself inside a home on Thundercloud Drive on the northeast side of Colorado Springs appears to have taken his own life.

The standoff forced the evacuations of surrounding homes in the neighborhood near Research Parkway and Rangewood Drive for more than seven hours.

SWAT members were called out to the home before 1 p.m. following a family disturbance. According to police, a man reportedly smashed the window of a vehicle outside and then went back into his home,
alone, carrying a propane tank and a drill. The man threatened to blow up the house and claimed that he had set up booby traps at entrances around the house.

Officers saw the man inside when they arrived, possibly armed with a long gun.

Just before 8 p.m., and after several attempts with tear gas resulted in no response, police went in and found the man dead inside. Police said it appears he took his own life, though that will not be officially determined until the coroner examines the body.

Neighbors told 11 News Thursday they're struggling with what went down so close to home.

"A little shocked,” said Jeri McCarl, whose home was evacuated. “[I think] I knew something bad was going to come out of it just by how everything was going on."

Evacuations were lifted by 8:15 p.m.

Authorities have provided mental health resources for the man's family.

Police have not released the man's name at this point.
