A Canon City man allegedly attempted to hold his girlfriend captive during a domestic dispute, ultimately cornering her in a room after he set it on fire.

According to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Steven Patrick Collins disabled 26-year-old Maria Atencio's car and threw her purse onto the roof to trap her in the home. He then allegedly took her cell phone to keep her from calling for help.

As Atencio tried to gather clothes from the laundry room, the Sheriff's Office says Collins poured gasoline on the floor in the laundry room/kitchen area and ignited a fire. Atencio managed to escape the flames by climbing over a counter.

Atencio's 3-year-old son was in the home during the incident, but was unharmed. The Sheriff's Office says Atencio and her son share the home with Collins.

Collins has been charged with first-degree arson, false imprisonment, criminal mischief, child abuse, harassment, obstruction of telephone service and domestic violence. He is being held at the Fremont County Detention Center without bond.

The incident occurred Friday morning on the 1500 block of Willow Lane in Canon City.
