Police say that reports of a gunman on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus Saturday morning are unfounded.

The report caused the school to go on lockdown for a short time Saturday morning. The man was reportedly spotted in a campus building carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor.

MIT said in a statement Saturday that several law enforcement agencies, including State and Cambridge police, responded. While authorities searched the campus, students and workers were told to stay indoors and report suspicious activity to campus police.

Officers cleared the scene around 10 a.m. EST.

More details were not immediately available.
