A welcome home ceremony for approximately 100 Fort Carson Soldiers was held Thursday night at the Special Events Center on post.
Soldiers of the 62nd Engineer Company (Sapper) deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. They are the last Fort Carson Soldiers to depart the Iraqi theater of operation.
"It feels great, it's one of the best presents the Army could have given me," said Raymond Faivre.
"At one point, we didn't know if we were gonna be ale to make it back for Christmas, but once we found out, it's one of the awesome gifts... not only for me to be able to be with my family, but for my family to be here, with me," Hector Garcia.
The Sappers provided route clearance and route sanitation on all major roads in the Dhi Qar and Diwaniya provinces, totaling an area in excess of 13,000 miles.
During its final weeks in Iraq, the company received the force protection mission and assumed the responsibility of protecting 27 towers while simultaneously conducting roving patrols. Overall, the 62nd Engineers contributed over 12,000 man hours in support of Combat Outpost Adder force protection.
