A new trial began Monday for a man convicted for brutally assaulting his former girlfriend.

Ryan Cantor is accused of pistol-whipping, burning and sexually assaulting his former girlfriend. Springs police say it happened during a car ride in 2010, and the proof is reportedly on a video recorded by his cell phone.

Prosecutors played the recording for the jury.

In December, the jury found Cantor guilty on several assault charges, but could not reach a decision on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault. There will be a new trial for those charges.

Sentencing on his guilty charges will be postponed until after the new trial is over. Cantor already faces life in prison for the assault charges.
