The Fremont County coroner says the death of an inmate at the Colorado Territorial Facility in Canon City appears to be a homicide.

Coroner Carlette Brocious said Friday she had no other details and was still gathering information.

Inmate Matthew Melina died Wednesday afternoon.

Melina had been in custody of the Department of Corrections since March of 2010 on a five-year sentence from Jefferson County for the robbery of an at-risk person. He was paroled in September of 2012 and returned to prison on a parole violation in November of last year.

The Colorado Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General is in charge of the investigation into Melina's death.

At this time they have released no further information.
