Hundreds of Springs residents volunteered their time at an area park Saturday morning cleaning, weed pulling and otherwise working to beautify one of the city's green spaces.

Saturday's event was the first "Spruce Up the Springs" event of 2014. More than 400 volunteers showed up at Monument Valley Park in downtown Colorado Springs Saturday morning. The city says along with weed pulling, volunteers picked up trash, cleaned up areas of the park and installed playground equipment.

At 11 a.m., there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground.

The city says the event was sponsored by Comcast Cares Day, and gave special thanks to Friends of Monument Valley Park and Monument Creek.

If you missed your chance Saturday, there will be another Spruce Up the Springs event, at a different park, on May 17.
