Household Hazardous Waste Discard Event For Flood Victims

El Paso County is partnering with Manitou Springs to provide residents impacted by the recent flooding with an opportunity to discard hazardous household waste.

The devastating flash floods that have pounded Manitou Springs throughout the summer have left many residents needing to get rid of hazardous household waste.

El Paso County is partnering with Manitou Springs to provide flood-plagued residents with an opportunity to discard these unwanted items. This Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon, residents can take the following items to the Manitou Springs Public Services Facility on 101 Banks Place (list provided by the county):

Paint and paint-related products (stains, strippers, thinners, varnishes, etc.)
Household chemicals - (aerosols, ammonia, bleach, cleaners, lamp oil, etc.)
Lawn & garden chemicals - (fertilizers, pesticides, poisons, plant food, etc.)
Automotive chemicals - (waxes, motor oil, antifreeze, bug/tar/chrome/vinyl/cleaning products, engine cleaners, brake & transmission fluids etc.)
Electronics (computers, printers, scanners, TVs under 19 inches, cell phones, audio/video equipment, digital cameras, camcorders, fax machines, etc.)
All types of batteries - lead acid vehicle batteries and all types of household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, watch & hearing aid batteries)
Medicines & medical sharps - (hypodermic needles, lancets, etc.) from people or animals. No controlled substances will be accepted. Package items as follows:
• Mix loose pills together in a clear, sealable bag.
• Put other medicines (liquids, patches, ointments, inhalers) in a clear, sealable bag after removing any prescription drug or personal information.
• Place sharps in either a sharps container from a pharmacy or an empty, clean liquid laundry soap bottle with a narrow neck & a screw lid.

All chemicals must be placed in non-leaking containers which can be left at the site. No business waste at this event.

There is no charge for dropping any of these items off. Items will be accepted for disposal or recycling.
