Fire investigators are working to figure out what caused a local home to go up in flames.

The fire broke out just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday at a home on Hathaway Drive. That’s near Platte and Powers Boulevard in Cimarron Hills.

Cimarron Hills Fire Chief Matt Love says there is severe damage to the back of the home. At one point the deck was engulfed in flames, and then the fire quickly spread to the attic. When our 11 News crew got on scene, flames were shooting up over the roof of the house.

Two adults were inside when the fire started but they made it out okay. Fire crews also worked to get the homeowners' dogs out safely.

11 News talked to neighbors who saw the flames.

“The grandkids were upstairs and one of my granddaughters came downstairs screaming, telling us the house next door was on fire. Everybody was trying to find their shoes. We all ran out of the house. It was so bad it was like daylight. That's how bad the fire was in the backyard,” explained Margaret Luna.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within a couple of hours, but remained on scene into Thursday morning to make sure there were no flareups.

At least 16 homes on the street are now without water due to a water main break, which could be connected to the fire.

Love says the home will most likely be a total loss. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
