An alleged gunman has turned himself in after an hours-long standoff at a North Carolina drugstore Friday morning.
The situation began at 2 a.m. EST when police say the gunman walked into a CVS pharmacy in Belmont, which is 15 miles outside Charlotte, and tried to rob it. Charlotte CBS affiliate WBTV says he was carrying a SKS scope mounted rifle.
Police were called to the store, which is when they say the situation escalated: Police Chief Charles Franklin says the suspect fired several shots at the first officers to arrive and they returned fire.
For more than four hours, three employees were held hostage inside. They were released at 6 a.m., but the gunman still refused to surrender.
During the situation, WBTV reports that police were able to monitor the suspect using surveillance footage from inside the store.
The situation came to an end just after 7 a.m., when the suspect finally came outside and turned himself over to police.
Officers have identified the suspect as Edward Scott Russ, 46.
