Optimal weather conditions Tuesday night allowed firefighters to get the upper hand on a wildfire burning west of Fort Collins, with crews reaching full containment on the fire Wednesday.

After days of dry weather and gusty winds, humidity increased and winds died down enough to allow firefighters to complete containment on the Galena Fire.

Going into Wednesday, the fire was still at 85 percent containment, which firefighters reached Monday night.

Firefighters prevented the fire from growing further Monday despite afternoon winds strong enough to force one of the helicopters on scene to be grounded. The fire held at 1,348 acres that day, and was still that size at full containment.

Hundreds of residents were forced from their homes after the Galena Fire was first reported Friday, but all were allowed to return Saturday night. No homes were damaged. The only structural damage reported are several pedestrian bridges in Lory State Park.

Four firefighters also sustained minor injuries.

Authorities believe the fire is human-caused, but have not released how it began.

The Galena Fire burned land west of Horsetooth Reservoir, close to the scene of 2012's High Park Fire. The High Park Fire was Colorado's most destructive wildfire ever until the Waldo Canyon Fire.
