A shocking act of vandalism has temporarily shut down one of America's iconic monuments.
Authorities in Washington D.C. says someone splashed green paint around the base of the President Lincoln statue at the Lincoln Memorial.
Police believe the vandal or vandals struck just before 2 a.m. EST. They are currently viewing surveillance footage to pick out the suspects.
The vandals didn't write words or draw symbols; authorities say they just splattered paint on the statue. D.C. CBS station WUSA9 says paint can be seen on part of Lincoln's chair and leg.
The monument will remain closed until the paint can be cleaned. There's no estimate on when it will be reopened.
