A local school district tells 11 News a teacher made a mistake that left a little girl wandering along a busy street alone.

We're told the teacher at Grant Elementary in Colorado Springs accidentally put a tag on the kindergartner's backpack on the first day of school. Every kid who qualifies to ride the bus get one. It has information on it like which bus the child should get on and where they should be dropped off.

However, the 5-year-old girl's mom told the teacher she would be picking up her daughter everyday. Instead, she was put on the bus and then dropped off at her bus stop.

District 11 says as soon as they knew something was wrong, they sent the driver back to the bus stop and found the girl walking a short time later.

We spoke with her mom about the incident.

"I've never seen any other mistake like this ever happen, my daughter, she could've gotten hit by a car walking on Academy by herself and the fact that I've seen news reports about a van going around picking up children, she could've been picked up. What if something like that would've happened to her?" Dutchess Jones said.

The school district says the teacher has apologized and they're working to ensure this doesn't happen again. They also say they've offered to move the child to a different school if they want.

A representative for D-11 says every year they send out a letter to each parent to let them know their child qualifies for bus transportation. At that point the parent can call the school and say the don't want to child to ride the bus. In this case, the girl's mom say she never got that letter.
