A former high school football coach charged with sexual assault on a child will be in court Wednesday.
Colorado Springs police say 21-year-old David Kindig was an assistant football coach at Liberty High School, which is in District 20.
Police tell us that a school resource officer filed a police report on December 9 of last year, after finding out about an alleged inappropriate relationship between Kindig and a student.
According to an arrest affidavit, the student was 15 years old.
The court papers say Kindig and the student had two intimate encounters--one at Kindig's house and one in the parking lot of a Wendy's Restaurant.
The court papers go on to say that the victim ended the relationship, because a rumor was going around the school. Kindig told officers that they never had sex. Their two intimate encounters were mostly kissing and touching.
An official with District 20 tells 11 News this was Kindig's first year coaching at the school, and his employment ended in November once the season was over.
That report was forwarded to Colorado Springs Police Crimes Against Children Unit for a follow-up investigation.
11 News spoke with a student at the school who is on the football team. He says he can't believe his former coach was arrested.
"I honestly thought it wasn't true. But then it started showing up everywhere, on Facebook, on the news. So I was like, 'wow, I did not know him as well,'" said student Austin Schwabe.
Kindig is out of jail on bond. His hearing Wednesday is a disposition hearing.
Kindig is not the first coach from Liberty High School to face charges of sexual assault on a child. Travis Clark, who taught science at the school, was arrested in July of 2012 for sexual assault on a child. His trial is set for April.
