People in El Paso County who suffered damage during the recent flooding can now get help from FEMA to cover some of their expenses.

FEMA officials tell us there is no specific amount being set aside for El Paso County. It will depend on what the need is in the community.

The money is available now for people who suffered damage or loss in the recent floods.

A FEMA official tells 11 News the first thing people need to do is contact their insurance company.

After that, they need to register with FEMA to see what assistance they qualify for.

There are grants and low-interest loans available, and the money can be used for a variety of things.

"Home repairs that are not covered by insurance, rental costs for temporary housing, serious disaster related need not covered by insurance, such as medical, dental, fuel expenses, moving and storage fees, property replacement" said Renee Bafalis with FEMA.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that scammers often come out of the woodwork after disasters.

"Please be aware that scammers are out there after disasters to take advantage of individuals and families," said Bret Waters, the Director of the Office of Emergency Management for the City of Colorado Springs.

FEMA officials will be at the Disaster Assistance Center in Colorado Springs to answer questions.

It is located at the Canon School at 1201 W. Cheyenne Road in Colorado Springs.

It's open until 6p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6p.m. on Saturday.

To register with FEMA call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or click on the link below.
