She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1981. She was the first female cadet wing commander during her senior yaer.
She was a Rhodes Scholar and earned her pilot wings in 1984. Since then she has logged more than 3,600 flying hours in C-141, T-41, KC-10, C-17, C-5 and KC-135 aircraft.
The academy says her start date hasn't been determined, but it will be sometime this summer.
