Firefighters are now in the "mop up" stages for a small fire at a Peyton park.
One witness says the fire appeared to be burning about 50 meters off one of the walking trails at Homestead Ranch Regional Park, which is located off Gollihar Road in Peyton. She and a friend first spotted the fire when they went out for a morning walk.
"I live about a mile from the park and there is heavy smoke everywhere," Brittany Hayes told 11 News in an email. "I smelled it when I walked outside this morning to go for a walk."
Though there are number of homes near the park, officials say the 1-2 acre fire was slow-moving and never threatened any homes. No evacuation order was issued.
Firefighters worked fast to get the fire contained, trying to stay ahead of potentially stronger winds later in the morning. Firefighters from three agencies responded.
The park had recently undergone major renovations, and was scheduled for a "grand reopening" at 10 a.m. The Division of Wildlife confirms the event is still taking place.
