Updated: 05/14/2013 - I'm still focused on meeting my goal of doing a pull-up. And I'm almost there! But I'm always getting this question:
Flare-ups are still popping up all over the spot where a hay barn used to stand. Debris from the structure still smoldered well into Thursday night.
The fire started in a hay barn and quickly spread to a nearby field. Fifteen acres burned before crews could contain the flames to one area.
The hay barn is located on the property of farming store Big R in Falcon. An employee spotted the fire and called 911 around 12:56 p.m.
Other than the hay barn, which is a total loss, no structures were damaged. Our crew on scene says at one point the fire crept up close to one home, but did not reach the structure. Three homes in the area were evacuated for about an hour.
The owner of the barn says the building was worth close to $270,000 and it was loaded with hay. The price of hay is very expensive right now.
Falcon, Black Forest, Ellicott and Peyton fire departments all responded to the fire. Firefighters remained at the scene all night because the fire was expected to burn overnight and well into Friday.
Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. They are expected to be okay.
Investigators with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office are now working to find what caused the fire.
The Big R is located at 14155 Highway 24, east of Colorado Springs.
