Nine cars were damaged or destroyed during a fire behind the Walmart in Canon City.

The fire broke out Saturday night behind the Walmart on Highway 50 and Dozer in Canon City sending thick black smoke into the air.

A fire department spokesman says the fire started on pallets of cardboard and plastic that was to be recycled. The fire department says the burning plastic is what caused the black smoke.

Nine cars that were in an adjacent parking lot for City Auto Plaza were also damaged. Some of the cars closest to the fire also reportedly burned. Other that were farther away suffered heat damage such as melted taillights.

The fire department says no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
