It's going to be looking a little brighter in Colorado Springs!
The final streetlight from the 8,000 shut off in 2009 will be turned back on at 5 p.m. Mayor Steve Bach will be doing the honor.
The city prioritized restoring those lights in the 2012 budget, using $150,000 in savings to fund the measure. The process to turn back on all the streetlights began on October 1.
The lights had been turned off in 2009 as a cost-saving measure.
"Streetlights are an important function in any urban environment to help provide better visibility and increase safety for drivers and pedestrians traveling at night,” Transportation Manager Kathleen Krager said in a statement released by the city.
The last streetlight to be restored is at the northwest corner of Academy and Constitution. According to the city, this is the last working streetlight to be restored; there are some lights that remain off due to copper theft. Springs Utilities crews are working on repairs.
