Troopers from the Colorado State Patrol, Buena Vista and Florence responded to a one car motor vehicle accident on Highway 50, 16 miles west of Poncha Springs.
This happened 9:40 a.m. The investigation revealed that a 1996 Toyota Tacoma driven by 35 year-old Jorge Blas of Leadville was traveling west on Highway 50. The driver over corrected and lost control of the vehicle on the snow covered roadway.
According to State Patrol, the vehicle rotated counter clockwise and slid broadside off the left side of the road hitting several trees with the passenger side. After hitting the trees the vehicle slid down a steep embankment and rolled onto its driver’s side.
Passenger Josephine Herrera, 60, from Leadville, was seriously injured in the crash and transported to Heart Of The Rockies Regional Medical Center where she later died from her injuries. The driver and two children ages 10 and 15 were also transported to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
Driving too fast for road conditions is considered a factor in the crash.
