Fatal Semi Truck Accident Investigated

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal rollover crash that happened on Colorado 25 just south of Exit 23 in Las Animas County. One person died and another person was injured in the crash.

Troopers say a semi pulling two box trailers, driven by a 52-year old James Smith from Mesquite, TX, was northbound on Colorado 25 when it ran off the left side of the roadway and into the center median.

It continued northwest through the median, came back
across both southbound lanes of Colorado 25 and ran off the west side of the roadway through the grass shoulder ditch and on to the west frontage road.

The trailers stayed connected and one did spill its cargo into the grass

At approximately 1500 hours, the Las Animas County Coroner's office pronounced the 52-year old male driver deceased. The passenger, 43-year old Jeffrey Poland from Heath, TX was extricated and transported to Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad, CO.

Alcohol/drugs and speed are not considered a contributing factor in the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
