A 16-year-old student has been charged as an adult, the Boulder County District Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The teen was arrested earlier this month in connection to a live explosive device found at a Boulder County high school.

A teacher called police after spotting a suspicious-looking brown paper bag in a hallway at Centaurus High School in Lafayette just after school began on May 13. Authorities determined it might contain an explosive and called for the Boulder County bomb squad. Students were sent home for the day.

Sister station KCNC says authorities confirmed that the device inside the bag was a real explosive, similar to a pipe bomb, and were able to successfully detonate it. Rumors swirled that there were other explosives planted on campus, but police said those rumors were false.

Police later identified the 16-year-old student as a person of interest. Lafayette police found additional evidence potentially implicating that student in his home when he was arrested there.
