Classes are returning to normal at a Springs-area elementary school after smoke damage shut down the school for nearly a week.

Students were evacuated from Evans International Elementary School in Peyton March 12 after a fire started in the south wing of the building. The school was shut down the rest of the week for cleanup efforts and air quality inspections.

The school says eight classrooms were affected by smoke damage.

Due to the temporary school closure, testing was disrupted for students taking the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program. Students will be allowed to complete the testing now that the school is reopening.

"Crews are working around the clock to ensure the building is clean and ready for our students to return Monday," said

"Safety of students is our first and foremost concern and students have not and will not be exposed to dangerous conditions," Dustin Horras, Evans International Elementary School principal, said in a statement last week.

Horras says he does not anticipate the school year being extended because of last week's incident because the school was already well above the state's required instructional time.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says a student at the school started the fire. He is too young to face charges, but 11 News has been told he has been disciplined by the school.

Evans, which is part of District 49, has about 750 students from pre-K to fifth grade.
