Evacuated residents are being allowed to return home Friday morning as crews begin to get the upper hand on a wildfire burning near a popular tourist town.
Despite concerns that dry lightning and winds from summer thunderstorms could continue to pose a threat, the Red Canyon Fire has not grown in two days. Burning about three miles southeast of Glenwood Springs, the fire remains at 390 acres.
Containment jumped from Thursday morning to Friday morning, going from 27 percent containment to 75 percent.
The fire began moving away from Glenwood Springs Thursday, but authorities worried that it could remain unpredictable due to the ongoing threat of thunderstorms. Lightning from an earlier storm is believed to have caused the fire.
But as of Friday morning, authorities are confident enough in having reached a turning point that they lifted all evacuation and pre-evacuation orders at 9 a.m.
Residents who were evacuated are warned that they may not have electricity.
We are continuing to follow all updates out of Garfield County.
