Evacuated Inmates Returning To Prison

Prisoners are returning to the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility after an unprecedented evacuation one week ago.

More than 900 prisoners were evacuated during the Royal Gorge Fire, a first in state history. Buses could be seen exiting the prison grounds one by one late on the night of June 11, the first day of the fire. Smoke necessitated the evacuation.

Evacuees were taken to prisons across the region, including 24 from the infirmary that were taken to Denver. Inmates began returning Tuesday. It's unknown how long it will take for all the evacuees to return.

None of the other correctional facilities, including the infamous Supermax, were evacuated during the fire, which was contained over the weekend.
