CANON CITY, Colo. Thursday, folks in one southern Colorado community got together to plant new life in an area that was crippled by the Royal Gorge Fire last summer.

More than 65 volunteers from Keller Williams Realty in Canon City and other groups tossed seeds and planted trees along County Road 3A. That's the road that leads to Royal Gorge Park.

The seeds were meant to cover land that wasn't hit during an aerial seeding earlier this year.

Park officials say the seed was purchased through federal and state grants and is a mixture of native grass, shrubs and colorful flowers. They hope the new landscape will not only beautify the park, but stabilize the ground as well.

"I was talking to a couple of the agents that have some kids... what it would be like five to 10 years from now and show our kids that we did this, you know. An impact that will last forever," said Tony Greer, Canon City's mayor and the owner of Keller Williams Realty.

The park hopes to plant 5,000 new trees. They're having another seeding on May 15.

The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park had a groundbreaking ceremony a few months ago. The park is expected to open mid-August.
