The South Platte River was the scene of a dramatic rescue early Friday morning after a driver lost control and flipped his car into the riverbed.

The driver's condition is unknown, but sister station KCNC says he was alert when first responders reached him. The river is especially shallow where he landed, and divers were not needed to get him out of the car.

The driver was on South Platte River Drive near the Denver-Englewood border when he went off the road. It's unknown what caused him to lose control.

The crash happened around 5:40 a.m.
