Douglas County Schools Try To Explain Surplus

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) -- Douglas County school officials are trying to explain how they ended up with a $66 million budget surplus after making big cuts, including administrator jobs and 177 teachers.

Superintendent Elizabeth Celania-Fagen says some of the money came from unexpected savings in energy costs and employee buyouts.

According to the Denver Post, school officials plan to keep some of the money to avoid further cuts this year.
