Denver police officers shot and killed a man after he refused to comply with orders to drop his weapon.

The man was standing on the 2600 block of South Federal Boulevard Tuesday evening waving a gun in the air. Police had been called to the scene on reports that the man was suicidal.

Sister station KCNC says that officers tried to use non-lethal force to get the man to put his gun down, but the man refused. A witness said one of those measures was firing beanbags at the man, which reportedly did nothing to deter him.

Officers made the decision to shoot the man out of concern for public safety.

The suspect later died at the hospital. He has not been identified.
