There may not be a public hearing of the evidence gathered against the Colorado theater shooting suspect until next year.

A lawyer for James Holmes told Judge William B. Sylvester on Thursday that the defense needs more time to review about 19,000 pages of documents received so far.

The public airing of the evidence gathered against Holmes had been scheduled for next month. Prosecutors said they also could use more time.

Sylvester said he will rule later on the request.

The 24-year-old is charged with killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in the July 20 shooting in Aurora.

Also Thursday, mediator Ken Feinberg begins meeting with shooting victims and their families as he decides how to distribute charitable donations to them.
