The deadline to sign up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act is just days away.

In this 11 Call for Action Alert, we are breaking down what you need to know if you still need to sign up.

People have until Monday, March 31st. to sign up for insurance. That is the deadline for Colorado; other states might have different deadlines.

If you get insurance through your employer, or if you're on Medicaid, you don't have to do anything. This is only for people who are not currently covered.

"When it comes to getting sick or getting hurt, we don't plan for that so when you do end up in the hospital it will be nice to know you're covered," said Brenda LaCombe, the Outreach and Customer Support Coordinator for Connect For Health Colorado.

Connect For Health Colorado is the marketplace that lets you shop for insurance, and also see if you qualify for financial assistance to cover your costs.

If you have any questions about the process, you can call 1-855-752-6749. That is the hotline for Connect For Health Colorado.

They have extended hours leading into the weekend: Thursday and Friday 7a.m.-8p.m., Saturday 7a.m.-10p.m., Sunday 9a.m.-10p.m. and Monday 7a.m.-midnight.

If you don't want to go through Connect For Health Colorado, you can also approach insurance companies on your own, and work directly with them.

If you miss the deadline, you won't have another chance to sign up until the next open enrollment in November.

You will also face a penalty of $95 per person, or 1% of your entire household income, whichever is greater. 11 News has learned in many cases, people will likely pay the 1%. That number will keep going up if you don't enroll in the future.

You will be fined the amount when you file your taxes for 2014.

If you are in the process of applying and run into difficulty, causing you to miss the deadline, contact the people at Connect For Health Colorado. They will help you figure out what the problem is, and how you can move forward.
