Firefighters made significant progress Monday against a wildfire burning near ranches and oil and gas wells in northwestern Colorado.

The 450-acre Elk Springs Fire is now 90 percent contained, in part thanks to favorable weather conditions that enabled firefighters to quickly get the upper hand. The fire started Saturday night in windy conditions near a small ranching community of the same name. It's burning just south of U.S. Highway 40 in grass, sage, pinion and juniper, primary sage grouse habitat.

The Elk Springs Fire is the second significant wildfire reported in the area in recent days. The area is susceptible to fires because of drought conditions and lightning from thunderstorms.

Firefighters fully contained the Alkali Fire near Maybell Sunday night. That fire burned 32 square miles.
