Storm to Bring Rain & Snow to Southern Colorado

County Will Remove All Concrete Slabs After One Falls Off Building

All of the concrete slabs on local building will be removed after one of them broke off and fell nearly 20 feet on Friday afternoon.

On Monday morning, a structural engineer assessed the panels on Centennial Hall in Colorado Springs.

Each panel is 10 feet long and weighs more than a ton.

We talked with an El Paso County administrator, who says the age of the steel connectors played a big factor in the fall.

“Over the last 30-plus years there's been corrosion with some of the connectors and bolts with the one that came down on Friday. He [engineer] recommended that we remove all of the panels and we are going to do that very quickly,” Deputy County Administrator Monnie Gore explained.

Gore says the remaining 25 decorative panels around the perimeter of the building will have to be replaced. There's no word on how much it will cost to replace the panels.
